Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to offer events for Heritage Open Days

One of the UK's leading attractions, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard* (PHD), has announced that it will host a variety of free events in conjunction with Heritage Open Days.

Held each September, Heritage Open Days is the largest festival in England for history and culture, giving free access to many venues and historic sights.

PHD will run some seriously cool and unusual expert-led, behind-the-scenes events including:

  • Behind the Scenes: Stories of D-Day, 6 September
  • The Mary Rose, 6 to 9 September
  • HMS Victory Live: The Big Repair, Timber Marks Tour, 7 September
  • Behind the Scenes: The Armada Maps, 9 September
  • HMS Victory: The Big Repair, Shipwright Scaffolding Tour, 10 & 11 September
  • National Museum of the Royal Navy Storehouse 11, Behind the Scenes: The Trafalgar Sail, 10 & 11 September
  • The Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Submarine Jolly Rogers, 12 September
  • The Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Jolly Rogers Toddler Tours, 12 September
  • HMS Victory, Behind the Scenes: HMS Victory Conservation Tour, 12 September
  • Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower, Life as a Royal Navy Diver, 13 September
  • National Museum of the Royal Navy Storehouse 11, Behind the Scenes: Royal Navy Art, 13 September
  • Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower, Shanty Social @ Explosion Museum, 14 September

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard launches four new walking routes

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has created four new walking routes to help visitors get the most from their time exploring the expansive collection of naval ships and exhibitions spanning some 500 years.

Did you know? If you purchase an Urban Explorer ticket*, you'll pay once but can visit as many times as you like for a year.

Working with a wide group of active adults and Olympian Roger Black, PHD has curated the following routes for visitors of all ages:

  • Trafalgar Trail - including HMS Victory, Victory Live and the Victory Gallery
  • Submarine Saunter - experience life onboard Britain's only remaining WWII submarine, HMS Alliance
  • Mary Rose March - step back into Tudor England & even try a spot of archery
  • Warrior Walk - test your sea legs aboard the pride of Queen Victoria's fleet, HMS Warrior
